The power of repetition. There's something about how humans perceive patterns and repetition that fascinates me. When I was approached for this commission piece, I was told a story of a couple who seemed intrenched in the number 23. Birthdays, first meetings, and a wedding all seemingly destined to have the commonality of 23. The skulls, sea turtle, and Mario mushrooms all playing significance to this relationship I wanted to show that on canvas. Peeling back the layers of these elements, showing the depth and deep roots was my goal. I was also told about their wonderful kiddo who has had more than his fair amount of challenges with ADHD and sensory issues. I wanted him to find ground and comfort in this piece. Knowing that even though things might seem strange, when you look through the layers of things, you can find familiarity and calmness. It's pieces like this that go to families like them that make me love what I do.
